    Near a pylon (health and the sizzling noise)
    Near a pylon. We stayed on holiday near a huge one with multiple lines and my son was complaining of tingling fingers whenever he put his fingers near the light switches, the metal inside of the dishwasher, itchy/crawling feeling on his neck and headaches. 
    Everyone has different tolerances to it (it didn't obviously affect me at all) but it made me wonder how much of the effect we couldn't see/feel.
  • Everything is a compromise so one might be more or less important depending on other factors.
    Things that are differerent: draw & drawer, brought & bought, loose & lose, dose & does, payed & paid


  • Dirty. Wouldn’t buy a house that was dirty, who knows what else would be neglected if the owners weren’t even arsed to clean.

    Hi. I have bought a property that suffers from a motorway, of which in terms of noise, I was not aware of although I knew location was a compromise in that aspect. However, I am lucky to not suffer the others, and the noise itself, is not overwhelming, it's just 'there', not inside of course, but outside. We are actually further away than a lot of the other houses, some are extremely adjacent and those are the most  expensive homes. I guess they benefit from nobody opposite them as it is the suds/greenery area.

    Did you not view the property? Did you not check a map? Ask neighbours? Drive past and listen?  Everyone will have different opinions but please do due diligence first and don’t complain about issues which were either obvious (eg a school will have traffic twice a day) or that a quick bit of research would have shown (buying a property near a church with a peal of bells and regular services might not be ideal if you like Sunday morning lie ins!

    Many years ago, when in the VOA and dealing with Council Tax appeals, a CT payer complained about noise from the M1, which was about 75 yards from their house. When I asked why they bought a house so near, they replied they didn't realise the M1 was there! Yet to reach the house from their previous home, they would have to have driven under the bridge which carried the M1, just a few yards from the entrance to their street.
    If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales
  • I used to live very close to the M1 (and Luton Airport)! I loved the hum of the motorway and after a few weeks the planes didn’t bother me either - even the 3am DHL one!  

    I now live within hearing distance of the A16, which again I love the background noise. If it really bothers you, try increasing your screening, such as bushes, trees etc.
