I am setting up a new (mini) PC and have discovered that text is not being formatted correctly - right across the board - from "search box" to address bar in Firefox and Edge
I am unable to include "spaces" in text .....

Try holding the alt key while pressing 32 on the numeric keys (those on the right of the keyboard). This is an alternative way to input a space character. If it works, it's probably a duff keyboard.

Use Windows on-screen keyboard as that will narrow down the culprit.
