Just go new boiler and accompanying thermostat. After giving up on the programmer we are going manual we are retired so suits us. We drop the set temperature to 15° at night then hubs gets up at 7am to put it back up to 20.5° for daytime.
Yesterday there was frost on the ground but being on for around an hour it was up to 20.5°. By contrast, today it wasn't so cold outside but it took ages for the temperature to reach 20.5°.
I'm thinking that maybe yesterday it was cold enough overnight that the heating switched on unbeknown to us and therefore warmed up quicker in the day.
This to me says switching heating on and off may not be as economical due to time it takes to warm the place up.

There's an ongoing debate about leaving heating on 24/7 or having it on at certain bits of the day.
We've had ours programmed to come on at some time in the morning (can't remember and can't figure it out) but it's at 14 at night, and then 20 in the mornings and then 16 during the day and then 21 in the evening before going back to 14. Well that's too cold as the house almost never gets up to even 19 when it's really cold. I got up at 5 this morning to put the heat on and it was only up to 18 at 9 am.
I know that the insulation in our place is abysmal and no way to remedy so need to look at alternative ways to heat the place. The boiler is good, the radiators a bit meh so it's going to be electric heaters scattered about I think.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on Debt Free Wannabe and Old Style Money Saving boards. Don't forget that the temperature is more than just that - what shade do you have on your house, what direction is the wind blowing? Having lived too long in Canada there was always the weather reports saying that the temperature might be 0 degrees but the wind chill would take it to -10. It's not a considered thing too much in the UK.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on Debt Free Wannabe and Old Style Money Saving boards. I have my heating set at 21 deg C from 07:45 to 23:30 and then 18 deg C overnight.
It now takes less than an hour to raise the temperature to 21 deg C whereas before the temperature could fall to 15 deg C during the night and could take over 2 hours to reach 21 deg C.
At present the temperature in my unheated greenhouse is minus 4.5 deg C
Yesterday (Friday) I used 69,96 kWh of gas.
Last week when the temperature was higher, I was using, on average, approx 35 kWh of gas daily so my daily gas usage has doubled since last week.

Even during winter, solar gains when the sun shines is worth 1-2°C of free heat. Also have a smart(er) control hooked up to the boiler. Quite easy to set a different temperature for every minute of the day/week if I really wanted to. But I've gone for 16°C overnight, 18°C in the morning, and 19°C late evening. It is worth persevering with your programmable thermostat. If nothing else, you won't have to worry about forgetting change the temperature manually. Nothing worse than waking up in the middle of the night wondering if the thermostat has been dialed back.

Could you at get an easier to use programmable thermostat?
We have a nest thermostat which allows temperatures to be programmed via an app, adjusted using the display device or the app and turned on or off remotely using the app. This last feature is handy if the heating is off when you're on holiday/away as you can turn it on so the house is warm(er) when you arrive.
Because it's linked to our phones, it also turns itself off if we're both out. We do have a minimum temperature set, and the heating comes on if that is reached.

You may have given up on your programmer but has it given up on you? If it is still partially operational then that might explain why you can't understand what your boiler is doing. And the whole point of the programmer is to save "hubs" the chore of getting up at 7 am each morning to manually adjust the heating. Can you not find someone who can master your programmer and get it to do automatically what you are having to do manually at present?Reed0

As the day wears on the details show it has gone on to programmer 2 instead of showing programmer 1 until 10.30pm. It is brand new but of course could be faulty. It works fine on manual.0 -
Make & model of the programmer ?It might be a settings issue that is easily fixed with a magic incantation (button presses). Her courage will change the world.

Are you sure it’s not going onto program 2 at 10.30 am when you want pm? Is it preset to the 24 hr clock so needing 22.30 for the evening change?1
