Hi
On the directgov probate search why do some entries state a city name as the registry office and others say principal registry.

Because applications for probate and administration could be made to a registry local to the deceased, or the the main registry. So you might register in Wakefield for a death in the West Riding or West Yorkshire, or in London.
And if the deceased died outside England and Wales but owned property or shares/bonds etc in England, executors had to reseal the probate/admin in England, in London in order to access those assets. If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing0 -
Thank you. I had thought probate was dealt with at the nearest town/city to the deceased.
I have found two matches. The city/town name doesn't match on the first entry, and I'm pretty sure it isn't what I'm looking for, and I won't know the location of the second unless I request a copy. Though it would confirm either way. I'd rather be more certain before doing that and not request details for an unknown/unrelated person.

It costs £1.50, unless they've changed it recently. Ans since they are public documents, anyone can look anytime. If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing1
