Shower hose question

My current shower is leaking from the connection between the hose and the shower head. I've tried replacing the rubber washer but it still leaks which probably means I need to replace the hose.

I have a spare hose which is brand newand taking out of the bag I note that it's cone to cone.

My question is, would it be safe/sensible to replace the current host which is nut to cone with a cone to cone? Or should I avoid the hassle and get a new nut to cone one?

  • It should be fine. It'll even look fractionally better
If the cones are slightly different to eachother, check to see which one fits more snugly in the handset holder, and fit it that way around.

I'll try it later today. There is a rubber washer on side not both.

You need rubber washers on both connections.  The threads should be identical.

Only issue is sometimes the 'cone' threads start too far in and then they can't tighten up onto the washer if fouling the outlet metalwork, or handset shoulder ...  double washer thickness can work in that case?  (Looks a possible 'problem' from your picture, to me.

I tend to smear a small smear of silicone grease on the washers and threads to help next removal, and use rubber gloves to tighten/loosen by giving better grip.

Cone or nut is not important. What is, is the seat in the end of the hose - This should be flat so that the rubber washer has sufficient surface to sit on and seal properly.
As for which end goes where - Usually, the cone goes to the shower head, and the nut on the wall fitting. If you have a cone either end, it doesn't matter..

Try a bit of ptfe plumbers tape wrapped around the thread.

You do need a washer at each end.
Rescue one from the old hose - the less marked one.

The cone is just an odd shaped nut ultimately. The only potential is if the thread on the water outlet is long enough to engage with the cone properly or not as pointed out by others above

PTFE tape on taper thread fittings yes. On a fitting where a rubber washer provides the seal, PTFE tape is just pointless and will do nothing.

  • So I managed to finally connect the new hose - it looks better but it was a pain in the *** getting it on because of the lack space behind. I had to dig deep in the toolbox to find something that I could use because the adjustable ratchet was too big and I had the small size as well.

Anyways anyways unfortunately new hose doesn't work either. Please see the video below - I can't upload here directly. You can see the small drop from every second or so from where the hose connect to the shower head.

The questio is, is it the shower head itself that's the problem? Do I need to get a new shower head? I'm strugging to think what else it could be.

Hand tight should be more than enough to tighten up those fittings.
I have doubled up rubber washers in the past to get a decent seal (had to do that on a washing machine).
