Eye test due - new glasses recommendations.

I have an eye test due soon. My prescription is pretty high (over -6 in both eyes) plus I need varifocals. So I really need high index lenses.

Is anyone aware of any opticians other than Asda who offer these at no extra cost? Last time I got two pairs for £120, cheaper than a single pair of lenses in some places. I've just looked and they still do this deal 

I'll probably just return to Asda as the pairs I've got have been very good. But it's always nice to see if there are other options around.

I also need varifocals with high prescription, and used to buy from Asda. More recently I have gone to a small chain called Leightons, not cheaper but very much better, and I am a proper cheapskate normally. You only have one pair of eyes so look after them.

Always have the full retinal scan at my opticians. Asda glasses are fine for me too. Just wondered if anyone can beat their deal.

I quite fancy a pair of the RayBan Meta glasses which let you answer your phone or take photos but am worried someone could try and mug you for them. Will probably just stick with "normal" glasses

That said I suppose anything is better than wearing a pair of blinkers.

Has anyone used Glasses Direct for varifocals?
I'm wondering about trying them, if I can manage to get my prescription without ordering glasses at the same place I have the test!
Otherwise I think I'll try Asda. I haven't ever had glasses from Asda or Glasses Direct before.

You are ENTITLED to have your prescription. Whether or not Glasses Direct do good varifocals I cannot say. 

I would ask though, is this your first pair? If so, I wouldn't want to be going online, you need to 'learn' how to wear them.

I’ve used Glasses Direct in the past and also Googles4u and I’d recommend both online companies.  This year was my first time with varifocals and I was hesitant but I love them so much.  I ordered one pair to see how I got on and ended up ordering another pair a month later.  I’m pretty sure they offer returns too.  I find they offer a larger selection than my local opticians and they worked out cheaper than Specsavers, even taking the 2 for the price of 1 discount into consideration.

I've used Asda. Great for varifocals and high index. £120 for two pairs.

Both myself and my husband have used this company on the last 2 occasions we have bought glasses. I wear varifocals and my husband bifocals. When you have your eye test ask for your prescription and ideally get them to measure your pupillary distance (although you can measure this yourself). I wouldn't go back to a high street optician now, having had poor experiences with both Boots and Asda.

I've done some research, and generally Asda score really highly. Ahead of both Specsavers, Tesco and Boots with Vision Express rated worst.

So at £120 for two pairs of high index varifocals I'll stick with them. Might even stretch to £160 for the premium designer frames.

And importantly they also offer the latest in eye scans. I have a quite restricted visual field and peace of mind is very important. Total cost under £200 for two pairs inc eye test and scans.
