It seems to be impossible these days to open an online financial account without a mobile, so it looks as though I’m going to have to bite the bullet. I have a mobile but have never needed the phone function. Since I am only going to use it to receive texts from banks etc, what is the absolute cheapest way to achieve this.

I have a virtual mobile number from Andrews and Arnold which I put on my website. Callers to the number can leave a voicemail or they can send a text message to it. In either case the voicemail message or text is sent to my email address. This costs less than £2 per month and might be a way of achieving what you need?
