Free gas safety check from energy providers

I am posting this just in case others don't know about it as i didn't until yesterday.

Some energy companies offer free gas safety checks for those on low income with a disability. This is homeowners, if renting its the Landlord's responsibility.

One of the expenses we have had to cut is our annual boiler service.  We do know the risks involved and have CO detectors not a choice we wanted to make.

I stumbled across this yesterday when looking for grants  just in case our boiler is on its last legs.

For EDF if you haven't had a service in 12 months are on low income and are disabled and live alone or other adults are disabled you can ask for a free Gas safety check.  It wont cover fixes and repairs but will at least let us know if everything is safe and working right or if I need to find money for a fix.

The cynic in me can only imagine the free safety check is highly likely to lead to the suggestion of some work being done. Garages that offer free winter safety checks and guess what - they find a few jobs that need doing every time. The fact they only offer it to some customers however might prove me wrong, let's hope so.

I too started off thinking cynically... and to be fair its the safest way to approach things. But this seems to be part of the government scheme and big energy suppliers have to offer it.

If it turns out we need work doing i will have to look again at where to buy it from but hoping its a fair price.

Mostly I just want reassurance the boiler is safe

Most suppliers have schemes like this as part of their welfare commitments.
You do have to distinguish between those commitments and promotional offers.
Check if your supplier has a user forum, if they do then it's usuallly the best place to get advice from other customers about what is/may be available to you.
(PS. Don't be put off any company by complaints on their user forum. The majority of customers have no complaint so they don't shout - Which can make things look one sided towards those who do have a complaint).

    Thanks Newcad

If its anything like the priority scheme for disabled customers during power cuts and other help I've had it will be safe and fair.  The welfare side seems to be pretty good.

This is part of the welfare scheme not a promotional offer of 'free check'  like garages do on cars.

I just want to know my Boiler is safe and if its not I can try work out a plan.  Just low income, disability costs and each year councils put up how much i have to pay towards care means annual Boiler service was no longer in budget.
