Ebay account -odd situation

My husband only looks on ebay now and again. Today he was hoping to list something for sale but when he went onto ebay - if he puts in his email address it comes up asking for his password - which as far as he can recollect - he has never opened an account.(He was going to open an account). A notice came up saying that his account has been suspended and shows the last few letters of his email address and says that ebay has sent him an email - but there is nothing in his emails or spam. Also on that page it shows what it says is his ebay account name but it is not correct but part of it is if that makes sense. Not sure what to do or who to contact about it

Also, check the email account hasn't been breached anywhere. This is a good start https://haveibeenpwned.com/ but other similar sites are available.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.1 -
In the OP you say ‘he can’t recollect opening an account’ which implies there may well be an account open that was completely forgotten about. If someone browses ebay, even intermittently it seems quite possible that at one point an account was open perhaps waiting for an item they wanted to buy, but never did.
Its probably best to try ebay, see if the account does exist and whether they would allow a password reset. Whilst there is an account possibly in play, but suspended, it won’t be possible to safely open a new one.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. There was an account in play here, could this be the answer?

No its nothing to do with that. That sale was done on my ebay account - nothing to do with hubby.
@elsien the username was a couple of letters from part of his email address. He has no recollection of ever opening an account and no password is written down where we keep a record of things. He will just have to contact ebay to see if they can help. Thanks everyone.
