Creditcard late payment fee from Capitalone/Ocean when direct debit was setup

Options
Hi I got a late payment fee of 12 pounds on November12. I had setup a direct debit and it used to go from my account as bill payment.

When i login to my account now i dont see direct debit setup. What kind of scam is this? wont it affect my credit rating? I thought when we setup direct debit we dont need to worry about the payments as long as we ensure that the balance is there?

Please tell me what can i do now. How to avoid such things later? cant we trust direct debit? I really donno what to do

How long is it since you last used the card and had a direct debit taken to pay for it? If it's more than 13 months it's likely that the DD has lapsed. It happened to me once, I think I spoke to the card issuer and explained the issue, and they waived the late payment fee.
  • ''Go from my account as a bill payment'' ?? This suggests you have set up a payment from your account but this needs sending by you before the settlement date - It does not get taken automatically.

D/D I would expect to see if a direct debit had been set up.

    Perhaps the OP can clarify?

Did it say on your statement that the balance would be collected by direct debit?

I see an email from Capitalone that "Your direct debit has been cancelled. This means we will stop automatically taking payments for your capital one card".

This email came on 21 sep 2024. I havent cancelled it and i donno what triggered this to be cancelled

also on 15 aug 2024 - "we are making some changes to the capital one app. you will need to open the app and login to avoid having to re register"

i suspect this could have happened because of changes in their app as per the emails.

Call them and ask 'politely' why it was cancelled. Pay the balance in full now then ask if they'll waive the fee and maybe the interest

Did you not action the email about the DD.

Did you contact them to ask why?

  • I see an email from Capitalone that "Your direct debit has been cancelled. This means we will stop automatically taking payments for your capital one card".
As others have said, what action did you take when you saw the email?
DDs do get cancelled automatically after (usually) 13 months of non-use.  The automatic cancellation period was raised to 24 months during Covid - some banks have left it as 24 months, some have reverted to the original 13 months.
That may explain why your DD was cancelled, if you've not used it for a long time.
But regardless, they notified you that the DD had been cancelled for whatever reason - it was your responsibility to at least phone them up and ask why, and to make sure an alternative payment method was in place.

Hardly a scam, given that they told you about it.
