When does conditioner get added to a wash cycle?

  • That's an option, too, NTL - thanks.
I've just taken the wash out, and it does smell slightly aromatic - in a nice way. It does smell 'fresh', so it's clearly working.
I was just expecting 'more', I guess.
Quite possibly it's due to what 2Penny alluded to - the 1400 spin removes so much water that the cond will largely be lost too! I bet my drains smell great...
Anyhoo, all good - thank you all.

  • Apologies for hijacking Weird, but as a bloke who's only started taking an interest in washing because I WFH, how much separation of clothes do people do in regards to washing instructions? Can 30⁰ clothes really not be mixed with 40⁰ these days? Do colours really run so that I have to keep white shirts away from dark clothing? We usually have a mountain of 40⁰ darks but only do much of 30⁰ and light washes.

    All washing tips welcome

Also, we use Dettol laundry sanitiser in our washing

As an ex washing machine engineer - I just chuck everything in on a cotton wash. If I have a new pair of jeans I might wash them separately to stop everything turning blue, if I remember.
Tall, dark & handsome. Well two out of three ain't bad.

I separate darks / whites / colours and do everything (aside from bedding, towels wool and silk) at 30 degrees.

Wool and silk I do on a cold wash (as long as it is a washable wool / silk) with a wool/silk detergent

Bedding and towels I do at 60

  • We're similar to @Emmia except we don't bother separating darks from colours. I'm not sure I'd know where to draw the line, TBH, and we don't have much that's really brightly coloured (yellows, oranges, reds). The few I do have, I'm not fussed if they get toned down a bit.

We do everything at 30 degrees ( save the world and all that !) except bedding/towels at 40, and wool washes for wool/cashmere.
Occasionally will do white sheets or similar at 60 if they have a bit of staining.

We wash dark/strong colours together, and light colours/white separately. Use liquid for the former and usually powder for the latter, as it has a bit of bleach in it and the light/white items come out a bit brighter.

OP - Some coloured items will run the first few times you wash them. Once they have been washed a few times you can be less careful. You can also use 'colour catchers' . They do pick up excess dye/colour in the wash, but whether they would really stop that new red sweatshirt turning white items pink, I am not convinced.
  • I don't separate anything, all goes in together. I mostly wash at 30 degrees unless I forget to change the temperature in which case I wash at the default 40 degrees.

Never had a problem..... so far!.

The max temp is what is says on the tin so yes you can mix 30 and 40 clothes as long as you wash them all at 30. You can risk higher but they may shrink and you'll have no one else to blame.

The more times you've washed something the less likely it is to run. I'd wash white whites separately if thats how you would like them to be but for shirts I do mix my white and light blue because they are years old and dont run.

Wool, silk and other delicates in a separate wash with the appropriate programme and detergent, you can get silk detergent etc but wool detergent is ok for natural fibres if you dont do it often enough to justify separate.

If towels are white then a separate hotter wash is good to make sure they remain white but dark towels just put in with the normal wash

Never felt the need to add anti-bacterial to the wash, the long exposure to soap should kill off everything. Our machine has a self clean function that it asks to be run once every 2 months or so
  • Thanks all.  Adding 40⁰ stuff to 30⁰ has definitely helped even out the loads but undies are to kept in 40 wash insists the wife lol. Do you leave room in the washer when filling? Or cram it full?

Next: tumble dryer - stick to the instructions or to hell with it. Not talking woollen or anything delicate it's usually the branded athletic stuff that surprises me that I mustn't tumble, hoodies, leggings, running stuff.  As much as I can, I'll line dry but not having a south facing garden at this time of year means stuff is usually still damp

Just this morning put the dehumidifier on in the spare room with sports clothes
