Your passport will be put through your letter box in a main door house without a signature. If you don’t have a one you will have to sign for it.  Do NOT request secure delivery as all that comes back is your old passport   Your new passport is automatically sent by secure delivery.
Photos uploaded using a code are automatically accepted. If you upload your own photo it will be looked at by a caseworker.  You can crop it but it must not be filtered.
Once you complete the application you will be told where to send your old passport.  Once they receive it you will get a message.
Your application then goes into a queue to get processed.  If your photo is not acceptable you will get an email with a link to upload a new one
As they is very few applications being submitted at the moment your application will probably be completed on the day your passport is received.  The length of time it takes from start to finish is up to,you. The quicker you send in your old passport,  the quicker you will receive your new one.

Just to add to this post.

I renewed my passport online last Sunday (17th Nov), posted my old one back Monday (first class), got confirmation of receipt of old passport Tuesday, had message to say all details were approved on Wednesday and my new passport was being printed. On Thursday message to say it was being posted and it arrived Friday. I wasn't in so it was just put through the letter box.

With regards to the photograph question, you can go through the application process and upload a photo to get an indication of acceptance (but not a guarantee). The photo should be in the format as in their example (head, shoulders and upper torso) and their software does the rest in terms of cropping etc. Your uploaded photo will include information including the date it was taken etc so you should avoid using an old one as that would be unacceptable. You can do this before payment.

    Hope this helps.
