    Do you have a Henry or similar? That should do a good job of removing all the debris.

    Is that an actual extra hole in the casing, then? Does it look man-made or manufactured?
    Not sure that cover is the correct one, tbh - on yours, there appears to be a separate removable section around the turning shaft.
    Anyway, once all cleaned up, decide what needs to be done about that hole. If it serves no purpose and you want it filled, then if you cannot find a grommet or similar to actually fit, clean it up, especially the edges, stick duct tape or similar on the underside, and fill it up with StixAll, smoothing it off along the top.
