I buy loads of stuff from eBay.  A recent purchase showed this

“Running behind, original estimate was Mon 4 Nov - Wed 6 Nov”.  I was then told it would be delivered on 7th November.  It’s now 9th, no sign yet.

So it looks as if the seller has changed the date.

We live in sheltered housing.  There’s always someone around to take post in or the court manager will keep it for us if we are away.  In 7 years I’ve never had an item going missing.
'Running behind' suggests to me that the seller missed their target despatch time and sent it late. Ebay will usually expect delivery two days after despatch is marked imo.

No, see my post directly before yours.

I have a 2 day despatch and use 2nd class, item was bought just before midnight Tuesday 5th and I posted Thursday morning7th (day 2). Original delivery estimate was 7th-8th and buyer was able to open a case on the 9th. The sale now has the running late message but I shipped within my despatch window.

How did you pay for postage?
I don't see how ebay can know it hasn't been delivered unless it is a tracked service. Tbh I only know my royal mail posted items have been delivered when I get feedback on them

EBay use their own evtn codes….

We also upload tracking automatically for some orders using eBay's Virtual Tracking Number (eVTN). We add a unique, seven-character code to the second line of your buyer's address (e.g. 'ebay:12aB3cd')”

    https://www.ebay.co.uk/help/selling/posting-items/tracking-items-youve-sold?id=4088

I don’t know what extent of actual tracking they perform or if it’s just a delivery confirmation code.  But if it’s not yet showing as delivered by the estimated date, I expect that’s when eBay’s system will automatically say it’s running late.

Of course if you don’t buy your postage through eBay and choose not to include the evtn on the address label then they won’t work.

I don’t buy postage through eBay and if I’m not using RM Tracked I leave the evtn in place.  The orders usually show as ‘delivered’ in my eBay account once they’ve arrived.

It’s a large letter bought through eBay postage that just has delivery confirmation  It doesn’t have tracking, there’s about an 80-90% chance it will show as delivered , but nothing until then.

I’m hoping it will arrive tomorrow or Tuesday in line with RM estimates for 2nd class, as otherwise I will need to refund to close the case.

    Thought I would update this.

The skirt arrived today, with the postage label showing a posting date of the 9th November.

The seller told me on the 30th Oct the skirt had already been posted, and then on the 8th November that the skirt had been posted middle of that week and they had experienced a lot of issues with Royal Mail, so clearly they forgot to post and didn’t want to admit to that.

As it had now arrived I figured I may as well keep it, until I opened it and noticed the oil stain on the skirt, I checked the listing and it’s not on the photos, so now I’ve had to raise a not as described claim with a photo of the stain.

I have this on a few of my sales.  This is nothing to do with the seller (me) but the courier, usually RM.  The item does end up being delivered a day or two later.

I did think it was a bit strange, maybe it did change between me checking the listing and buying, that does seem the most likely explanation, and that I just didn’t notice until a couple of days later.

i’ll give the seller the weekend, and if I don’t hear anything further, I’ll try contacting eBay.
Are you looking at the estimated delivery date on the listing or for your specific order in your order page?

The date on the listing will change daily but that does not relate to an order already placed.

    That’s not what I’m seeing.

I placed an order an over a week ago which gave an estimated delivery of 12-14 November, and is what my order confirmation email states.

Order still hasn’t been despatched and the eBay order page currently shows an estimated delivery date of 20-22 November. No mention of overdue or late. The estimated delivery date isn’t ‘locked-in’ until the seller marks as despatched. Tomorrow, it’ll tell me 21-23 November (a few days ago it said 19-21 November).

I have to wonder, if my seller today added in a period of holiday to their account, let’s say they’re now away until the end of November, I think my delivery estimate would then, consequently, show as being due sometime in December.

I believe this is what the OP witnessed with their order. It’s not the seller changing the dates, not directly, it’s eBay and the way it’s set up.

As has been said that hasn’t technically changed the date, the date on the original listings is unchanged but either seller shipped late or there’s an issue with the postage method, hence the message about it being ‘late’.
Thanks for that.  I contacted the seller and she’s going to send me another one.
