I had the same consideration and picked Pixel 8. Had a crazy offer at the time, when it was fairly new, for ~£330 and a trade in (of an old, almost dead phone). Now that its a little older, if you have some time and can look out for a deal, you should be able to find it within £400.

If you had £400ish to spend on a phone and one of the top considerations, was it must have a quality/versatile camera, what would you go for and why. Any help appreciated.

Other have given you answers based on your £400.

My tongue slightly in cheek suggestion would be to buy a sub £200 phone and spend the other £200 on something else. :)

I don't mean to hijack your thread but I know next to nothing about mobile phones. My wife and I both bought OPPO A76 phones last year for well under £150. We both find the camera quality to be excellent and the phones do absolutely everything else that we require. I don't know what a £400 phone, or indeed a more than £1,000 phone does that we can't do on ours. Fancy photo and video effects and manipulation maybe but I can do that at home on my laptop.

Is the camera quality really that much better to justify the additional cost?

What else is better on more expensive phones than the OPPO A76 and other budget phones.

I spend a lot of money on high end laptops, TVs and audio equipment etc. Those are things that I do know a lot about and I know what I am getting that I won't get with cheaper kit but mobile phones are a bit of an unknown quantity for me.
A man walked into a car showroom.
He said to the salesman, “My wife would like to talk to you about the Volkswagen Golf in the showroom window.”
Salesman said, “We haven't got a Volkswagen Golf in the showroom window.”
The man replied, “You have now mate".
