Octopus Outgoing and FIT.

Is it possible to be paid the 15p Octopus Outgoing rate for export and keep the FIT generation payment? I realise of course that the FIT export payments would stop.

At present my FIT generation and export are with Octopus since Green Energy went bust. I have a non smart import/export meter so am paid actual not deemed export at the FIT rate. I have recently signed with Octopus for import but they seem to be implying that to get the 15p Outgoing rate I would need to forego FIT generation and export payments.

Does anyone here know if this is the case, preferably from actual experience?

  • What you want to do is certainly possible (I've read multiple times on this forum).  But I'm pretty sure you would need a smart meter for your export readings.

They have told me I can't have a smart meter (don't  know why) but half hourly data should not be necessary for the flat rate 15p Outgoing. At present they are paying actual metered export at the FIT rate without a smart meter.

You should still get payments for generation according to this answer on the FAQ page.

Under FiT guidelines, you get paid for being a generator, and paid for whatever you export.

You won’t be able to receive FiT export payments whilst also being on the Outgoing Octopus tariff. However, you will still be able to receive your generation payments. When you sign up to the Outgoing Octopus, you will be required to opt out of your deemed export payments from your existing FiT supplier (but there’s no requirement to switch your FiT contract to Octopus.)

That seems to be at odds with whatthey said in this email....

"Please ensure that changing from FIT to export is what you want to do, as once completed we are not able to put you back onto FIT since the scheme is over.

There's some information regarding the difference between Export and FIT attached below in links that can help you make an informed decision. Perhaps most importantly is the difference in what is credited: on FIT you are credited for exported energy and for generated energy, whereas on an export tariff you are only credited for exported energy."

Unfortunately there seems to be a lot of Octopus staff who do not have a clue about  the old FIT and export payments.  They messed up our first attempt to switch to them for metered export, second time round we got someone who knew what they were doing.   I suggest phoning them initially.

When were your panels installed?    Ours are from 2011, so we are on the highest rate of FIT.   They tried to tell us we would lose our FIT, which is nonsense.  We were on 50% deemed export with EDF but wanted to move our export to Octopus.

The FIT payment is actually a totally separate thing from the export payment.  In the end it was easier to move both payments from EDF to Octopus.

There is a form somewhere on the Octopus website to get the outgoing Octopus 15p  metered export, I do think you would need a smart meter though.  The info is not easy to find on their website.  You do need to sign to say you wish to opt out of deemed export, the info above from keep pedalling is correct.

We already had a Smart meter that could show the export, but you need to get an export MPAN for it to do that.  Once you switch to metered export, you cannot change back.

Otherwise we have the official Generation meter that we submit readings from for the FIT  payment.   This is paid direct into our bank every 3 months, the Outgoing Octopus 15p amount is credited to our Octopus account monthly.

We found part of the problem is that you cannot talk direct with the department that handles the FIT and export payments, customer service have to contact them and then relay information.

Once we got past this the FIT team communicated with us by e mail and everything was done on line.

It's always better when you can talk to the organ grinder rather than the monkey! 😀

I suspect the smart meter issue will be  problem though as it is a requirement for Outgoing Octopus tariff that you have a smart meter that can be read remotely....

Are you sure you have an export meter?  That's very unusual for panels installed under the FIT scheme because it wasn't necessary.  Even if you do, half hourly data is a red herring; the issue would be convincing Octopus that it gave accurate readings.
