Whether it could be the last flooring you buy will depend not only on the quality but also on how old you are!!

We put down good quality carpets when we moved into our house some 36 years back, they are still good, we are 75 and 82, so they are the last carpets we will need now.

A really good 80/20 Wilton these days could be £50/sq. m.    And LVT will be upwards of £20 bought on line, and even £40 if you go to a  fancy flooring place.  Then there is installation.

Sounds reasonable to me, certainly not outlandish.
But as said, area and quality of what you have choosen.
Also how long will you be there. If selling and the carpet is cheap it will look it by the time you sell.

I've had to buy cheap for some time and each I wished I'd forked out a bit more to have good stuff. I have quality underlay and carpet now from the place I bought and it really makes you feel good.

Just rereading the OP, it is mostly for bedrooms. So normally a good quality hard wearing 80:20 mix would be overspecced, and something a bit cheaper and feeling a bit softer ( like a good Polypropylene one ) should be OK.

Paid £700 supply, fit and remove old carpet on stairs and landing a few months ago. Carpet was around 26m2
  • We used designer carpets online outlet and then had a local fitter. 60m2 worked out at around £1800 with cloud 9 underlay, with Westex Major twist carpets

Also quick tip if you have no carpets currently, this is a great opportunity to check for any loose or creaky floorboards (or perhaps seal big gaps) and fix now!
Covered the floor in my lounge with 5mm thick woodfibre laminate underlay. On top of that, put down 11mm foam underlay before having the carpet fitted. Had to use screws in place of nails to secure the gripper roads. It kiiled all the draughts coming up through gaps in the floorboards and has made a huge difference in comfort levels.

Interesting, FreeBear. Did you have a height difference between the lounge and the (say) hallway / adjacent rooms? The way you've described what you did, suggests that the lounge carpet would be higher / had more underneath it?

There is a little difference in height, but not enough to notice. And when I'm done decorating, the hallway will also get a layer if the 5mm woodfibre underlay.

OP, it's worth looking at local carpet places if you haven't already. In our old house, over the years, a lot of the house was done with offcuts. We had a good relationship with Gary the fitter who would always tell us if they had a decent offcut as an option. Got both sets of stairs and landing done for £300 earlier this year in our old house before we sold it. Fitting shouldn't be expensive but I always removed the old carpet and fixed the floor/cleaned up before they came. The last time they told us to keep the old grippers in as the new stuff is pretty rubbish apparently.

We moved into a new build 6 years ago (2018) so required carpet and underlay, cost us £3000 then for lounge, stairs and landing and all 4 bedrooms. We went for good quality underlay and carpet, which you end up paying more. Unsure about square meters though, it is a reasonably big detached house.

So with price increases after covid guess thats still not bad what you getting, depends on how big the rooms are.

Should add Carpet Right wanted a lot more compared to £3000 for the same exact carpet, we went with a local carpet company and saved quite a bit.

Not a price issue, but our usual local carpet fitter is happy to move ( heavy) furniture about. When we asked others if they were willing to do that, they seemed a bit reluctant to commit.
