Hippo Bag Alternatives

Are there reliable cheaper alternatives to Hippo Bags?

We are in West Sussex and we are refurbishing a shower recess. We need a MEGABAG (L)180cm x (W)90cm x (H)70cm or similar for disposal of the old plasterboard, tiles, shower tray etc.

A skip will cost us about £300 so we decided to get a Hippo Bag.

Last week Hippo Bags had a promotion on the MEGABAG reducing the normal price of £235.98 by £46.00 down to £189.98. Unfortunately that promotion expired on 31st October and I cannot find another offer or voucher code etc. I phoned Hippo this morning to see if they would do anything but they wouldn't offer me any reduction on £235.98.

Are there any other reliable alternatives we should investigate?

Thanks

He said to the salesman, “My wife would like to talk to you about the Volkswagen Golf in the showroom window.”
Salesman said, “We haven't got a Volkswagen Golf in the showroom window.”
The man replied, “You have now mate".

As an alternative, would it be feasible to take the waste to your local council tip in the back of a car?  Might need a few trips, and obviously it'd cost you a bit of fuel - but probably an awful lot less than the price of either a skip or a Hippo bag.
If that's something that would be do-able, ask around on your local Facebook page or wherever to see if anyone's got a big sheet of polythene they could let you have, you could put that in the car to stop it getting messed up too much.  Particularly if any of your neighbours happen to have had a washing machine or fridge-freezer delivered recently, they usually come in massive polythene wrappers, and they'd probably be glad for you to take the packaging to the skip for them, save them a journey.  Or even old sheets/curtains, that kind of thing.  Just to stop you getting plaster and what-not all over the boot of your car.
Bit of a long shot, but just an idea.

Thanks Clive but I don't want to do that. It would take a lot of time and effort.

I am happy to pay a reasonable price for a reliable waste removal service.

If I cant get it done for less than £235.98 I will book Hippo.

When young and fit I used to get huge bags from the builders merchants to use for garden waste.
They are the ones they get sand and gravel delivered in and were free. I've seen some people using them at the tip recycling center still.
Not sure if they are available now or if they charge but there's no harm in asking.

It's not so much of a problem getting a large bag and filling it. The issue is getting someone to take it away and dump it.

    I'm 72.    :D

Thanks for the suggestions but I'm paying whatever it takes for someone else to remove the rubbish.

Check out the local rubbish clearance firms. You might find someone gives you a decent price.
  •  Hughes waste- depends where you are in West Sussex but they cover Chichester. I’ve used them loads of times and always been reliable and 1 tonne grab bags are £72. If they don’t cover your area I’d just google similar and see who offers grab bag collection where you are.

I’ve always found hippo ridiculously expensive thus you will be able to find something cheaper.

Check if your council do a "bulky bag", our local one does that size for £186.

Can also be purchased from Amazon (10 for £32). I've repurposed used bags for rubble, and have had them taken away by a grab hire - Worth ringing around a few local companies. But if you use a grab hire, the bags need to be close to a road where they can pick them up easily.

I bought a Hippo bag from B&Q, but then when I phoned to arrange collection, they were unable to guarantee they could actually pick it up due to overhead power lines (they were helpful with checking the lines on Google maps, but weren't able to confirm).  In the end, I spoke to a local rubbish removal company who did it for cheaper and were happy to drive past to check the power lines without charging.  Just make sure that they have the proper licence to deal with the waste and won't dump it somewhere!
