OP, we've got 4 vacuum cleaners and they all do their job well. For actual carpet cleaning we have one of those Vax cleaners - called something like a Power max pet design. Pretty good for washing the carpets. We did ours in the old house before moving and made them presentable. Takes longer to dry than they claim, you need to buy the carpet solution on top.
We also have Vax Air stretch for regular vaccing - has a long lead and hose so great for stairs and fairly lightweight. We also have a shark which is a handy cordless, and a blue pull along thing which I think is a Zanussi. Given to us by a relative and used for cleaning up DIY mess. We've had Dyson in the past as well. All pretty much a muchness to me, so cost was the main difference. The Vax Air ones are a lower cost equivalent Dyson for me, but work well.1 -
Thank you all for your suggestions! I now have a great list of vacuum cleaners to choose from

In our previous place, we had an Eufy robovac as we didn't have space (we were renting a small 1-bed apartment) and it worked great.
Since moving to a 2-bed house, needing a proper clean plus stairs, we got a cordless Shark on a Black Friday. It's great and while cordless might not last long for a 4-bed house (town house type?), it does mean less hassle with the cables.
Maybe you could have a robovac for downstairs and have a proper one upstairs1 -
We use Henry vacuum cleaners. We have 1 upstairs and another downstairs in our own home and we put a Henry vac in every one of our rental properties. Tough, durable, reliable, powerful, large capacity, long hose, long lead etc etc highly recommended.1

We have loads of hard flooring in our house, although think most of it is laminate. The previous owners must have been big fans. For normal hoovering you can turn the spinny brushes off so it's on suck mode for hard floors. Works fine for us.1

We have 280 sq m of floors …….carpets, LVT, and wood with rugs. We have a Miele Cat and Dog for large areas of hard floor, it can also take a powered carpet head for rugs. And a 36 year old Miele that we have kept as a spare and for cleaning out the cars.
A Sebo upright for the large areas of carpet.
And 2 Sharks for the stairs and quick clean-ups, this replaced a Dyson that still works….sporadically….. the Shark is much better. They are however rather heavy compared to the Dyson. So we have one for upstairs and one for downstairs, bought when on special offer. We take one of them with us when we go away in our caravan.
We also have a carpet shampooer, the brand escapes me, which is used by several other family members too. Much better than hiring one .1 -

No, I think it is most likely a Bissel, had it for about 9 years now. Not at home so cannot check.1
