Dial on wireless programmable thermostat

I have got a B Gas wireless programmable thermostat that generally works well. (It's linked to a Vaillant boiler, not a BG installation). Model WPT1.

However, when I went to adjust it recently before a holiday, the dial was turning but not impacting on the display, so the display was not changing in accordance with the turn of the dial. All other buttons work OK, as does pressing the dial.

I changed the batteries but that doesn't appear to have had a significant impact.

Any ideas as to simple things I might try to fix it, perhaps? Or am I looking at a replacement for probably about £100? (or less on eBay, I suppose)

Thanks

    Not familiar with the inner workings of the WPT1.. However, BG owns Hive, so if you broaden your search, you should find a direct replacement for £40 or less. The WPT1 is a discontinued/obsolete model now, so it might be worth considering something a bit newer - For £100 you could get a Wiser or Tado and have change for a beer or two.

    Could you show us a pic of the receiver, please? Ideally, if you are 'competent', you can slacken the two screws on its underside, and lift it off to see the exact model number - after turning the power off, of course.
    Most likely you'll be able to but a newer Hive prog stat to use, which will give you the option of Smart controls too, so you can set your schedules, change your temps, etc, from your phone.
    I'd imagine a repair is very unlikely. Can you feel the 'pips' as you turn the dial, or is it loose?
    Is it a 'combi' boiler?

    A quick glance at eBay sees used units for around £40, complete with receivers, or a brand new WPT1 for £50. But worth considering an upgrade. Or, a complete change as FreeBear suggests.

    Here's a photo of the rear of the thermostat with the details shown.
    The dial is clicking, in the usual way, as it goes round, it's just that it's not moving the selection or heat etc.
    Yes, it's a Vaillant combi boiler about 7 years old.
    I don't feel strongly about whether I need to have it 'smart' so that I can adjust from my phone.
    If I got a different type of thermostat, would I need to change the receiver by the boiler too? Or would they still speak to each other? I'd rather not have to get an electrician out to have to change that too.

    Simplest solution is a new WPT1 - on eBay for around £50.
    Second hand even less.

    If you sourced aWPT1, it should connect to the existing receiver. Fit a completely different make/model, then the receiver would also need changing.
    If you haven't had the boiler serviced this year and are thinking about getting it done, have the engineer fit a new receiver at the same time. There would (probably) be an additional charge, but you'd save on a call-out fee.

    Thanks both for your extra comments.

    It stopped working after the boiler service last month! Couldn't say if there was causation or not.

    I'll get a replacement transmitter and consider what to do in a year's time.

    If the actual display isn't responding to the dial, then the issue must be within that unit itself, and not the receiver.
    They rarely go faulty, so if you think you may upgrade in the future, by all means consider a good secondhand WPT1 from eBay as a tie-you-over. If it's advertised as 'working', then it must be - eBay will protect you.
    One other possibility worth checking first - do these units have a child-lock or anti-tamper setting that could have been activated?
    Search on for the instructions...!

    Worth trying;
    Press the dial in to fire up the display. Then press and hold the 'back' and 'tick' buttons simultaneously for three seconds.
    Anything happen?
    Or, press 'menu' button, and scroll along to find 'childlock'. Follow what it says.
    I know this is the newer model, but it could be similar;

    We've got one of those. It was here when we moved in. Nothing happens when we press or turn the dial, there is no menu or way to program it. All we can do is press the boost buttons.

    You mean nothing comes up when you press the 'menu' button?
    Have you tried holding down the back and tick at the same time for 3 seconds, after turning the display on?
