Inactive current accounts

  • I know that I do not need to, however, I have a number of accounts that would be otherwise inactive, where I send £1 via standing order to another every Monday and a standing order back for the same £1 every Thursday.

Did it originally for the YouGov bribe, that I no longer participate it since it changed. Just kept it going.
  • I would suggest "resetting the timer" for any debit card to ensure that it gets re-issued - just use it for a small transaction somewhere between 6 and 2 months before expiry so that it gets registered as "active".

Why?  I had an unused account that I wanted to use as a donor account for an account switch cashback. Setting up two active direct debits could be done from the comfort of my armchair. When I came to do the switch, the receiving bank asked for the debit card details, and I had to visit the branch in person to get them to reissue the card (branch within walking distance, cost me an hour of my time "when I got a round tuit", but literally "your mileage may vary").

I'll  make a note of the date then. :)
