I'm holding a small amount of TRI stock which last year distributed a "return of capital". For each share there's a distribution of around $4 per share and a reverse stock buyback. This case was about the treatment of a special dividend paid by a US company:

I think in paragraphs 120 to 133 of this case, the tribunal found it reasonable to rely on the distribution being classed as capital under overseas law and by the overseas tax authority.
