Flight delay compensation - American Airlines ongoing

Hi  i have tried to claim compensation from American Airlines as my flight from LHRW was delayed by 3 hrs to Chicago, and then missing my connecting flight to Alaska.  I was accommodated by the airline in a hotel, as the next flight was 24 hrs delayed and did not leave until the next day but this flight was further delayed.  i departed chicago late by 1.5 hours meaning i landed late and missing my group booking.  The airline came back to me with a $100 voucher for the trouble.  i am currently going through my travel insurance to see on what compensation i would be eligible to.  my question is, should American Airlines have provided me compensation for both flight delays? 1 flight was delayed, i was told due to weather, but some of the other group departed on their scheduled flight on time.  and the other flight wasn't weather related.  very frustrating.

If you had a single ticket from London to Alaska then the delay is measured as your schedule arrival time in Alaska v's your actual time.
There are not two separate delay claims as the US currently do not have regulations that would require them to pay compensation on a domestic flight (only on flights departing the UK under UK261 or EU under EU261...or other countries that may have their own regulations such as Canada or Turkey)
If the initial cause of the delay was weather or Air Traffic restrictions then UK261 compensation would not be applicable.
Travel insurance is probably the way to go
  • many thanks, the flight was with a tour operator, so was a return journey from uk to alaska via chicago, and then return back to Uk.  i don't understand how other commuters mentioned they travelled to australia from uk and were delayed and were compensated. but US regs are different.  but thank you.  i received £100  from travel insurance!

Not sure what you mean by other 'commuters', but flight itineraries (with connections, if any, booked on the same ticket) from the UK to any other countries are within the scope of the UK261 regulations.  As explained above, compensation is dependent on the reason for delays, in that no payment is due if caused by extraordinary circumstances beyond the airline's control, such as weather or ATC restrictions, so your ineligibility is because of that rather than the country you were travelling to.
