My seller wanted to leave a gas cooker and I said no, I don't want it. My solicitor refused to exchange contracts until it was removed as per instructions
Why would they move it before exchange of contracts, surely they just needed to remove upon completion.
Presumably this was an empty property - probate sale perhaps. Otherwise the demand that the sellers should have to manage without cooking facilities between exchange and completion would be entirely unreasonable!

Surely anything left by the vendors at completion that is not included as fixtures and fittings can be considered as abandoned, and the buyers can do as they wish with them, unless there is a prior agreement to remove them at a later date?
Very often people just don't want to move big stuff, so they can be obtained by the incoming buyers at a knockdown price. Of course, it could just be total junk.
Usually the deal is that the buyers solicitor writes to the sellers with a request for them to instruct their clients that “X, Y & Z has been left, please ensure that your clients make arrangements to collect the same within 7 days or the purchasers will dispose of or otherwise deal with the items and reserve the right to pass the cost of removal to your clients” - although actually getting any such costs can be a bit tricky.

If we ever move (very unlikely)  I'm not sure what will happen with the wardrobe in our bedroom. The removers got it in, but when we had the room recarpeted, try as we might, nobody could work out how to get it back out again. It doesn't come apart, and taking the doors off would make no difference.  We have had a new door and doorframe with the door hung the other way, but it should now be easier to get the wardrobe through the door. Can only thing that the new frame is a slightly smaller gap than the old one.  The carpet people managed to recarpet the room with the wardrobe in it including underneath it.

If there's something that we don't want to take with us when we move that's not really worth anything we just list it as "included" in the fixtures and fittings questionnaire.

Buyers can easily make their offer be contingent on the junk being removed. Or the offer is reduced accordingly. (Before exchange.)
