Thanks everyone, I think her best option is to speak or write to them direct.

I hope you're not quoting me out of context Defiant sweetie biggrin.gif

Having been at the wrong end of TV licencing tactics (and having a great time annoying them because I really didn't have a TV) I really have no love lost for them. It's the old chestnut - they use bully boy muscle on individuals to frighten them into coughing up for a TV tax few other countries have.

I'd be interested in a link to the law you mention, as I can only find info from TV Licencing..... and they're hardly going to be impartial now, are they? laughing-smiley-014.gif
If you do what you've always done, you'll get what you've always got.

You just have to know what they can and cannot do and alot of people here as you've seen don't wish people to know.

Of course from what you've said you didn't need to do anything and as I've said the government agree with you. Perhaps you should send them this letter,

The one I posted before was from the TV Licensing website but they removed it and replaced it with one saying you had to contact them. This is of course so they can arrange for someone to visit you but as stated they have to legal right to do that ;)

Do people posting along the lines of "We never watch live tv, or She never watches Tv recorded on videos" or suchlike really expect people to believe it? its just trying to squirm thru "loopholes" so the rest of us have to pay!

If you read the spiel on the licensing website it does seem to suggest that as long as the programmes watched via video are not from 'live' tv and you only watch dvd films etc you don't need a licence! which is precisely what my daughter does!

the tv detectors cannot pin point where a single tv is in halls of residence and are not usually allowed inside to check anyway.
It would be interesting to hear from any uni students to see if anyone has ever been checked whilst at uni.

if you use any device to receive television programmes as they're being shown on TV, the law requires you to be covered by a licence."...

I'd have thought this is quite clear. If you use your TV set to watch programmes at the same time as they are being screened on TV, you need a licence. If you use your TV set only for other purposes, you don't.If you don't have a TV, you don't need a licence. If you use a TV despite poor reception, you need a licence. If you use any other appliance to watch TV shows at the same time as they are being screened on TV you need a licence.

[Disclaimer: No TV and no visit yet from TV Licensing, who have been told and are welcome to come, and will be let in to look around if they do.]
    Trying to keep it simple...;)

Who are you or TV Licensing to say otherwise. This is another problem in that the Pro BBC lobby now think they are the law

If you want to moan about something how about the hundreds of millions wasted by the BBC each year!

Capita don't check these people for criminal records or anything so if you let them into your house it's at your own risk because their isn't a law saying you have too. TV Licensing have been known to break the law by making statements up so be warned
