Is a TV licence needed?

Hi
My daughter is in halls at Uni, now in her final year, she has always had a tv and paid for a licence, but the room she is in this year she cannot get a reception at all, so just watches videos and dvd's. Does she need to keep paying for a licence? It doesn't seem fair!

I would think so but I am sure there are others on here who have more expertise in such matters.0

If she de-tunes it she won't have to pay.
"You need a TV Licence to use any television receiving equipment such as a TV set, set-top boxes, video or DVD recorders, computers or mobile phones to watch or record TV programmes as they are being shown on TV."0 -
Thanks I'll tell her.0

No she doesn't
as long as she doesn't get someone else to record tv on to video's or dvd's for her to watch in her room.0 -
I think the fact that she has an equipment that is capable of receiving and displaying tv signal means she will need to pay tv license
from the tv licensing site:You need a TV Licence to use any television receiving equipment such as a TV set, set-top boxes, video or DVD recorders, computers or mobile phones to watch or record TV programmes as they are being shown on TV.
If you use a set-top box with a hi-fi system or another device that can only be used to produce sounds and can't display TV programmes, and you don't install or use any other TV receiving equipment, you don't need a TV Licence.Working towards:

it does not say anything about what you should do if you have poor reception int he area. I had very poor reception where i used to live for a while so returned my tv back to my parents as i did not need it and could not afford cable.Working towards:

So what if my daughter does nt have a TV but downloads programmes on her laptop using 4od ot the equivelant BBC player? Does she need a TV licence?Middlers0

no she wont as the laptop is not receiving tv signal but accessing the programs through the internet.
This is assuming that the laptop does not come with an inbuilt tv receiving card(some do but the your daughter would probably know as it is a selling point for computers).Working towards:

No she doesn't. I wish the Pro BBC TV Licence people would stop giving the majority who don't want it the wrong information. You only require a BBC TV Licence if you recieve LIVE transmissions.0 -
I'd like to point out my sig used to say how much I've saved in 18yrs by not having a BBC TV Licence but it seems to have been removed by the mods. I've not broken any rules or laws yet it's obvious either a left learning mod has done this or a BBC employee has put a complaint in and they've jumped. I could say it's got something to do with Martin working with them so much but nah moneysavingexpert aren't like that are they ?0
