Car insurance for non-UK residents

My daughter is resident in EU country and I want to insure her on my car so she can drive it when she visits, Aviva tells me that they don't insure non-UK residents. Is this a general insurance company policy? Is it worth changing Insurance companies? Has anyone any experience of getting temporary insurance cover for such situations? Any advice would be appreciated.

I know I can’t get my car insured for my overseas family so they just hire something.

You can do some quotes on a comparison site and see if there's an insurer willing to offer cover at reasonable cost. I recall when I added a Ukrainian guest to my car insurance Admiral were just about the only company I could find who would add her at something resembling the price they'd have charged just for me and my wife.

Alternatively if your taking about occasional short visits it's worth considering a shirt term policy or just hiring a car.

Does your daughter have a UK driving license or is it an EU one?

Very interested in this thread as will be in a similar situation next year when daughter is here for a few weeks. She has an EU driving licence now but passed the UK driving test.

@DullGreyGuy - any observations / suggestions? I consider you the insurance guru!

My foreign lodgers generally use Marshmallow - but that's for their own insurance, not to be added to another
  • Thanks for the comments. Looks like the best bet will be to hire.
  • sadly it does not seem to exist - the obstacles are non resident and not having a UK licence.
Even if you have dual residency, i.e. 2 adresses, the foreign licence is the barrier.
The only way you can do it is for 12 months - if you permantently return to the UK then surrender your licence for a UK one after 12 months.
All the companies online advertising for this type of insurance, require a UK licence a UK address, or they want to charge you slightly less than hiring a car. So you might as well just hire.
Gone are the days of any driver insurance, or just putting someone on your policy, at least in the UK.
On the continent, the person is insured to drive any car - not the person is insured to drive a particular car. So the UK system kind of doesnt make sense, but it does make more money for the insurance companies I suppose.

I didn't have any issues adding My Kiwi brother in law to a Direct Line policy temporarily, but this was 6 to 8 years ago, so the situation may have changed.

    It was possible before Brexit.

my DIL was added to our policy for a temporary stay with us  for a month before Brexit.

After Brexit it was refused as she did not have a UK licence.

It was still possible a year ago as I added my son to my Direct Line policy for a week. He only has his Canadian licence now.
