Leaving SKY TV

Hi, we have cancelled from 4 November. Are there any alternatives to Sky with function to record? We don't have a TV aerial and are in contract with Grain broadband provider. Thank you.

  • Only Virgin Media but you'd need broad band with them.
You'll have to hold out for a deal with Sky or buy a freesat recorder.

Sky are moving away from boxes that allow for  ‘recording’ to streaming boxes  , but as stated you can buy Freeview and Freesat boxes that have storage for recording ‘live’  TV , your  choice of broadband provider should be pretty irrelevant if you want to record broadcast TV ( obviously anything over your broadband is streamed , even ‘live’ TV over broadband is streamed , recording boxes work with broadcast TV .

If you don’t have a TV aerial then that is going to affect Freeview boxes with or without a recording function , and your existing Sky  satellite dish may be no use for a Freesat  box  ( with or without a recording function ) , so you may need an aerial fitting or changes to your dish .

You could  try ‘Freely’ , but doubt it allows local recording

A freesat 4k box will work with a $ky HD LNB (aka legacy/universal) and/or a $ky Q LNB (aka wideband) and is the most obvious simple plug and play replacement for a single $ky box.

(Q minis for multiroom will throw a spanner in the works though.)

ANY broadband ISP will work for virtually any pay TV or Audio streaming services you may wish to pay for.

BT You View / Freeview Play requires a UHF TV aerial for signal reception and recording.

OP could fit a UHF TV aerial at a cost.  But would need to check reception predictions at the location first... Using the Freeview Professional tool at https://www.freeview.co.uk/corporate/detailed-transmitter-information

TV Box Pro from BT/EE can record in 'Internet Mode', with no need for an aerial.

But the OP said they are in
contract with Grain broadband provider, so that doesn't help them (won't work without BT/EE broadband).

They will text you and ask you to call them.  In my case it didn't change their poor offer so I left 1 month ago and haven't missed them.  Interestingly I had another text a couple of days ago asking me to ring them.  I haven't.

I cancelled on their webchat today.  Interestingly there was a stage when they asked Do you want to hear about offers or Do you just want to cancel.  I went with the Just cancel route but presumably you could opt for the other one.  Also the email I got said something like It's not too late to change your mind "all it takes is a quick phone call
to 03337 594 842 "  I am not sure if that gets you to their retention team.

Why you should have to call them is beyond me.  If they want you to stay they can put a bit of effort into it..
