I had the misfortune of shopping at Frasers store in Meadowhall, Sheffield. I took an item and they refused to refund and would only give me a credit note or exchange. Suffice to say I was not pleased and believed they were breaking the law. Back in my days, retailers had to give a refund if you took the item back in original packaging. However, I did some digging and found that the law was changed with the Consumer Act 2015 whereby retailers only have to give a refund if the item is damaged or faulty, otherwise they can refuse. Damn! But I notice that majiority of other retailers do give refunds if you return an item. And to think that a major retailer like Frasers with inflated prices will not give your money back.
Well I will not be stepping inside Frasers again. I will stick with Primark around the corner where they have much better consumer policies.
Of course this is another nail in the coffin for the high street. When you shop online, you have more rights and you can get refunds. So where do you shop? No brainer there!

I lot of stores changed their return t&cs during covid as they removed the possibility to try before buying.  Many have not changed those terms, Frasers obviously have.  I suspect that the ones that haven't changed are keeping in mind that people CAN buy on line & not from them.  I have noticed that many less people seem to use fitting rooms than used to.

Given that House of Fraser and its reputation went into administration years ago and the brand now sits under Mike Ashley’s Sports Direct empire you should probably count yourself lucky they even offered a credit note

As far back as 1979 there was no right to a refund for goods bought in store.
  • If you don't shop in Frasers again how will you spend your credit note?
  • What was the 'item' you purchased?

No they didn't unless your day is pre 1979 and probably not even before then.

Generally best to ensure you fully understand your "rights" before trying to assert ones that don't exist!

I had actually purchased a sweater for someone as a birthday present but they didnt like it. I took it back to store and they refused a refund and gave me a credit note which I used to buy some other stuff. The last time I go in there!
My understanding was that pre-2015 they were obliged to give a refund if you took item back with original packaging and I won a few duels on the way. Maybe I misunderstood the law.
