What drives me mad is when 'form' has taken priority over 'function'. A moody grey background image, with grey text on top, may look stunning, but it's useless! And yes, I've seen that on a website!
You should be able to over-ride the site's colour choices in your browser's settings.
Once upon a time it was possible to totally ignore the CSS, giving legible text, but perhaps a rather messy layout. Perhaps it still is, if you know where to look.

Maybe I should be able to change such things, but ... I feel I shouldn't HAVE to!

Quite, but it is useful to know you can change it.
On an older computer, with an older browser, I had my own CSS file set up, so I could see the important content in a bigger text, the full width of the screen, with the sidebars pushed to the end.

  • Thank you all.

I have had my regular eye checks, including photography for retinopathy and maculopathy. All is clear.

I have purchased a 32-inch curved computer screen, which helps. Big seems to be better for tablets, Kindles, 'phones etc.

The poster who suggested photographing printed text and then displaying on a large screen had the answer.

I have osteoarthritis in my hands so I speak my messages into a microphone using Dragon. Some people make "typos" but I often make "speakos".
