Ok - this is a bit difficult....
...I work for a High st bank and have my main account at another bank. As you know I am supposed to have my main account with my employer.
I had bad credit in the past thanks to my ex husband and have been scared of tryng to open an account with my bank in case its refused - which I think it will be.
I really need to sort this out without losing my job. Should I just come clean to one of the account opening staff and ask if I can have just a basic bank account????
Help please

Talk to your HR people ..... you won't be unique within the organisation.
They must have security cleared you when you first started work ... so your credit history is probably known. If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0 -
If it's the bank I'm thinking of, I'd recommend having a word with Employee Relations without giving your name.
What I don't understand though is where your wages are paid into - surely they have to be paid into an account with the bank you work for?
If it's the bank I've got in mind, there's nothing stopping you having your wages paid into them (e.g. BBA) and then having them SO'd straight out into another bank.0 -
As a prior Manager with Barclays/Woolwich, it was also the same requirement that staff should have an account with their employer. I never did. (The pure reason behind this was to save money in payroll processing). However this was not monitored and many staff did not open an account, although I know they are moving forward to rectify this.
It would also be interesting to know whether your employer carrried out a credit check as part of their recruitment process. This is quite normal within the banking sector and most banks are not interested in a poor credit rating, they are more interested in bankruptcy proceedings.
So there are a number of questions really:
Did they carry out a credit check within the recruitment process?
If they did, then whatever information is there is OK, as you are now employed.
Are they hassling you to open an account?
If yes, then apply as you will probably be OK. If not and you don't want to open an account with them, don't bother.
Remember banks are businesses, and by getting all staff to open accounts they achieve 2 things:
They increase their customer base.
They save money in payroll processing.
A third advantage is they can increase their product offerings to their staff easily, ie mortgages, savings etc. These are all taken into account at different rates/info/credit searches etc to standard customers as if you work for them they will probably not expect defaults. Bad for business if staff default etc.
So if a bank gets all staff to open bank accounts, then looks great on there bookes for the amount of accounts open and increases market share etc.

First thing I would suggest OP do is check their contract of employment.
If it states there that your salary has to be paid into an account there then that is end of story.
Personally I would ask your line manager for a private word and explain your circumstances without it being in earshot of other members of staff (We 're all gossis really aren't we?).
If as it has been suggested that you have to open a bank account there don't they have a staff account? If by having a quiet word with your line manager you fail the credit score I'm sure he/she would telephone their lending/account opening team to overrule any decision not to give you an account even if it meant that you would have to do without an overdraft facility.
Welcome to the crazy world of banking!
Can I say here and now your performance in doing the job is the only thing to worry about - like targets, targets um did I mention targets?
Your posting states that you should have your main account with the bank you work for - this is incorrect - all you have to do in most cases is have your salary paid in - you can transfer all your money out on pay day.0
