Renewing insurance - non fault accident
Hello,
My car insurance is due for renewal early next month and I took out a new policy with a different insurer.
Unfortunately over the weekend I was involved in an accident. It was non fault, other driver admitted liability and I am getting the repairs / hire car through their insurance (I had initially opened a claim through my insurer but have now closed it).
I contacted the new insurer who informed me it would have to go down as a fault claim until settled and therefore there is an additional premium to pay. I can understand this if I was claiming through my insurance but as I am not claiming and the third party insurance are making all the arrangements is this still correct as I would have thought this would be non-fault by definition?
When looking at other quotes on comparison sites there doesn’t seem to be an option for this - accident at fault or not at fault? Surely the latter makes more sense? Just slightly confused and not sure whether to pay additional premium or look for quote elsewhere but not sure what to state on the form?

Fault or not fault means has the 3rd party settled in full, not who was deemed responsible.
As it is still ongoing it is a fault accident that you would need to declare for a quote.0 -
Thanks for the reply. So just to confirm on a comparison site I would need to select ‘Accident. At fault’ from the options list? The other two options are ‘Accident. Not at fault’ or ‘Accident. Both parties at fault’.Strange as doesn’t really reflect the situation and no real option for open claim or claim not settled. Still doesn’t make sense to me as I’m not claiming on my insurance but if that’s the rules I’ll just have to swallow it and pay the extra premium.0

In the circumstance above, I would select “Accident- not at fault”Mortgage free

OP, you can claim the additional premium from the 3rd party insurer as part of your claim if you wish to do so.0 -

I'd be less interested in what the TP Ins has entered into CUE as it will almost certainly show it as a fault accident for their PH. What is more important is how the OPs own insurer has logged the incident and what they are reporting to CUE.
If it is actually the third party insurer dealing with it then really they should have registered the claim and closed it immediately as non-fault. Some may be more prudent and if the OP is actually using an accident management company/credit hire then more may leave the claim open for 3-6 months to see if there is any approach from the third party.1 -
Thanks. Yes that’s what I couldn’t get my head around, I’d assumed my insurer would have closed off the claim and recorded as non fault and it’s that I would declare (not what the third party insurance has recorded on the database). I do have legal cover on my insurance and the solicitors contacted me, but have told them I don’t want to take anything further. The hire car is being provided via the third party insurance.0

Contact your insurer. Make sure they have closed the claim on their side. Then you can select accident : not at fault0

Hi thanks all. I’ve contacted my current insurer and they’ve confirmed all closed at that their end and also confirmed that I wouldn’t need to declare a fault claim as no claim actually made. I’d just need to declare there had been an incident but no claim made.0
