sounds like a scammers test payment.  a small amount that is unlikely to be noticed or won't be contested as too trivial and then they'll up the game.    Assuming this is just on Amex keep a record of when and who you talked to and what they said.  Ensure they know you think it is likely fraudulent.  Then if something more happens they can't blame you for not doing something to prevent it.
I tend to agree - but how do they get a 1.08 Prime membership payment charge - that 'purchase' doesn't exist. And why can Amazon not see it?
The payment didn’t go to Amazon, it went to the scammer. They’re using Prime Membership to make you think it’s Amazon
But it appears as a transaction on my Amazon UK account. Surely if it's listed in print on my Amazon.co.uk account then they should be able to see it? I'm not talking about the transaction appearing on my credit card - I'm saying it's visible in Amazon as a transaction.

I didn’t pick that up, I saw later posts referring to Amex and assumed it was a spoofing fraud.

I have bought from a non-UK Amazon location in the past, and although I had to set up a password for the new country, I believe they are linked. In the app, if I click on the flag at the top of the account page it gives me the option of logging into that country. Do you get the same?

  • I had a similar issue with my lloyds credit card.  As I only use it for big purchases to get the S75 protection I keep it completely frozen at all times.  My app notified me of 2 very small (under £1) declined transactions in quick succession in Spain.  I immediately called my bank who said it was a classic cloned card and they were doing test purchases so small that I would not notice.  If all well they would then go for a bigger hit.  Clearly as I only use it for big purchases (once or twice a year) and pay off immediately, I would have noticed it but having it frozen stopped it in its tracks.  The bank immediately cancelled the card and issued me with another.

I was however concerned as I'd only used it once in the previous 12 months and that was at Currys.  I contacted them and they insisted it couldn't have been cloned through them but I can't see how else it could have been.  I don't shop there now.

Card details can be stored for a long time before being used. So never take it that it was the last retailer used.
Groups that get the lists, do not use them themselves most of the time. They are sold on, often several times.
There is also Brut Force method of getting card numbers. All they need is a known working card & they just keep putting numbers in till they get another working one.

Just to update - the charge disappeared from the credit card and from the Amazon account.  ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

So must have been just a authorisation. As transactions do not disappear from CC statements.
Could just have been a check that card is still live. 👍

Once they get in, do they splash it all over? 😉😁
