My brother has managed to get caught by a speed camera twice this year. Both times whilst in the works vehicle.

Having done a speed awareness course 2 years ago he did not qualify again and got points on both this years occasions.

1st time doing 36 in a 30 zone, 100 fine and 3 points. When declared to his insurance they added just over £200 to his premium which he pays monthly.

This time clocked doing 56 in a 50mph motorway average speed check.  £100 and 3 points. When declared to his insurance no increase in premium and just a cost of £26 for admin.

He was expecting a big hike in his premium with it being his 2nd offence. He has checked the info on the revised documents they have sent and it shows he has 2 offenses and 6 points yet no increase this time. Bit odd!

Absolutely it will but as they added an instant increase the first time you would expect the same the 2nd time.

Wouldn't normally expect an increase mid term because of an endorsement. Most insurers don't even require you to tell them about such things until renewal time.

As above he might find things are different when he renews.

Your premium won't change mid policy for a conviction, it'll change at renewal.

A second SP penalty generally doesn't have a vast impact, at the end of the day the first one says you are a speeder, the second one just says you still are. Its not really new news

Ah! so my theory might not be totally stupid - I get caught speeding - get a faster car so they can't catch me!!

It did when he reported the first offence and that was mid term. Seems odd they added £200 for the first offense but nothing for the second.  His insurance documents say he has to inform them of points on his licence as soon as they are added.

Just a thought - after the first offence they found he was prone to speeding and upped his premium, after the second offence nothing changed, it just confirmed what they already knew.

Many years ago I was trying to decide if I should do a SA course, or just take the points. After trying some insurance quotes with different numbers of points I noticed that my premiums actually reduced if I declared 9.

Maybe they think that you will drive like a Vicar if you are just one more speeding fine away from a possible ban! 😁

Edit:  I just found my original thread. I posted it on this forum back in 2013.

Driving like a Vicar might well put your premium up!

Their Head Honcho (the Archbishop of Canterbury) was recently fined in excess of £500 for speeding near his palace

    https://news.sky.com/story/archbishop-of-canterbury-justin-welby-fined-510-for-speeding-12879052

(admittedly his 'speeding' was doing 25mph in a 20mph zone).
  • Permiums are risk-based. The insurance company will know by how much, on average, people with different convictions have different claim rates and costs.Of course the algorithm that calculates the premium is a closely-guarded commercial secret, and it will take all sorts of other things into account.
