credit card charges

I bought a ride on lawnmower of a local firm, paying by credit card, unfortunately after one use it stalled every time I engaged the deck,  they agreed to take it back and refund me the money, I did not hear from them for a week so disputed it though the credit card company,  they then said that it had a scatch on it where the deck engagement button was, I did not even know where this was but the man who picked it up did look at that, so was probably him who scratched it, they disputed my claim even though had written proof that they had agreed  to refund me, then offered me £130.94 less than I paid for it, £50 for the scratch and £80.94 credit card charges they occurred. now would have accepted the £50 , even though I know iI hadn't scratched if but are they allowed to charge me there credit card charges?

Was this a personal purchase, or a business purchase?

You have returned something that is not fit for purpose so should have received a full refund - I believe.  Try telling them what they are doing is against the consumer rights act and that you expect a full refund.  Give them some time to sort this and if they refuse then get your bank to refund the balance.
