Unsuccessful return - Robert Dyas and DHL

So I bought a few things online from Robert Dias for the very first time and the items came in different days / deliveries
One of the items was a small area rug. It cams super late and was not trackable at all.
When it finally arrived I had already changed my mind about it because I had then changed my curtains and furniture configuration so wanted something different now.
On the same day of arrival I contacted Robert Dyas customer service to arrange a return. Had to fill out a form online and give them 3 available days I’d be at home for collection. Then customer service called me to arrange a definite day. I offered to take it instore or print a label and drop somewhere, but they said collection was the only way. So I gave my available dates again.
Collection was then booked by RD customer service for Tuesday 15th - one week after my available dates. Ok nevermind, I thought. No time slot.
But then later on the 15th I received an text message and email from DHL saying collection would be in the evening between 21:09 and 22:09. Nobody showed up.
I called RD customer service on Wednesday 16th, they said collection would be that day. Nothing.
Called RD customer service again on Thursday 17th and I was told that collection had been attempted on two previous days…but I was at home and I can guarantee that collection was not attempted. So they said today, the item would be collected for sure. Nothing.
Today, Friday 18th, I called DHL customer service instead and I was told collection would certainly happen today. I explained the situation and he said that he was going to notify the driver to come and collect today and it would not fail because of this notification. Obviously address, phone number all confirmed. The driver apparently will call me too. It is nearly 8pm. I don’t think it will happen.
I stayed home 4 days waiting for collection. I work from home now so it is not massively disruptive but I can’t go anywhere or plan anything - not even groceries.
Next week the ordeal starts again. Where do I stand? What else can I do? I just want my refund.
It is within my cosumer rights to return but I feel they are making it impossible. If I knew Robert Dyas was that bad on delivery / return, I’d never consider them for online shopping. I’m surprised they are still in business.
