Don't forget that you will need checked baggage if you want to bring insect repellent with you.

Hi just to say I had an amazing time
Spent a grand in a week as everything was expensive but admittedly I chose to have cocktails and I went to jazz clubs and the opera which adds up (I was with a friend for most of the trip)
Morning bagel and coffee came to around £15 whilst many places expected tips
I didn't tip Starbucks etc
I did the empire state, ellis island and statue of liberty, the edge, Chelsea market and high line, brooklyn winery, tenement museum, the met gallery, moma, the met opera, carnegie hall, new york comedy club, rumhouse and birdland... and the big bus tour.
The taxi was around 100 dollars and I got a receipt which I will share... apparently you can ask to avoid the midtown tunnel to reduce the cost?
So pleased to have had my first long haul flight experience and esta experience. New york was amazing and exceeded expectations. Much more welcoming and relaxed than i expected.
Norse do check your bags so make sure they fit! I was worried as my carry on personal item was a tight squeeze in the sizer
Also beware at JFK as there are unofficial people trying to lure you to cabs. Follow signs and you can't go wrong. Use only the official dispatcher

I know this thread is a couple of years old but I'm curious how that North Face backpack held up for a full week in NYC. I'm planning a similar trip and realized that hauling a heavy pack onto the subway after a long flight is probably a mistake. I've been looking at Transfeero for a ride from the airport instead of dealing with the train. Hope the ESTA process was smooth for you back then.0

Off peak it will be fine I would think.Another option is to use the Long Island Railroad from Jamaica to Penn station which is faster but a bit more expensive. This will likely be less crowded than the subway trains.
