What would you suggest for these gorgeous windows?

Hubby and I will be exchanging on a gorgeous apartment in the next few weeks.

We absolutely adore these gorgeous sash windows, which look out over our private garden and wildflower meadow beyond which all residents can use.

We absolutely don't want curtains or window film, but will likely want to obscure the bottoms panes during the evenings if we have lamps on or darker mornings when I nip into the kitchen to make my early morning coffee.

Not sure wooden shutters would be our choice, but we would like to lightly screen just the bottom panes in case folk are out walking dogs, enjoying the grounds etc.

Are there any types of binds that might work and fit the frames? Any other suggestions we could consider? We're not so concerned about the side panels as these will only look out on our own garden, not beyond into the shared space.

This is a total change for us; we've always been curtain people but we definitely don't want to detract from these gorgeous windows or the faux wooden shutter details.

Thanks for any and all suggestions, we've lots to think about and need to make a start!

Frosted film is one option, but you might find you want curtains for warmth / insulation purposes.

Shutters that fold neatly in to the paneled area at the sides. Have split sets that cover the top & bottom, and you can shut off the bottom when you want privacy, and the top half at night to keep the heat in.

Even if you think you won't use them get some good heavy thermal curtains, it will help frame the window, I've seen people use  roller blinds that work bottom up so you can just obscure the bottom half of the window, its a great idea

    Wow - stunning, indeed.
I'd probably go for a freestanding, folding, screen, of an equally gorgeous design, of the required height. Stand it to one side, squished up, when not required. Still looking gorg.

I have voile curtains just on the bottom pane of my windows - not too expensive to try and take away if you don't like.  You can also get stick on frosted film which you could try and take off if you don't like.  I prefer the cloth as I can pull it aside if I want to look out.

  • Thank you so much. We've two of these bays and I had thought of folding "room divider"type screens that can be folded and moved aside when not needed, so will definitely do some research on those.

Definitely don't want window film as this view is to die for!

I hadn't heard of "bottom up" roller blinds so thanks again... off to Google for those! I have a bit of a thing about about voiles/nets and really don't think they'd work either for me or in this apartment, but thank you for your suggestion and input.

Any more suggestions welcome! Thank you all.

I would not want to cover up those windows either.

Take a few images into a specialist lighting shop and see if they can suggest lights that shine out into garden area and stop anyone being able to see inside.

    How is the room heated?

  • Beautiful windows, but definitely need soft furnishings for them in terms of curtains
