Seems an odd thing to get exercised about.1 -

E.ON Next I feel are using an underhanded tactic to force me to have new gas smart-meter. Any advice please how to thwart E.ON Next's ploy?
You pay supplier for having the meter in general (although reportedly some might wave SC after a year orcso) not the actual supply.
For 6 years have you still been paying the now average £115 standing charges ?
You should maybe have asked EOn to remove the meter and cap the supply. That would have stopped any SC and dual rate tariff.
The GDN - National Grid no longer listed as one of them on ENA site - would then have disconnected from mains 12m or so later - normally free - if required.
Thanks for your reply. National Grid did in fact disconnect and cap that existent Gas Meter old-style maybe with analogue reading from the Gas Mains outside the house. They did advise me to get in tough with then Supplier to have it removed but I stuck to it in the a sort of fore plan that I may one day get the gas supply reconnected

Seems an odd thing to get exercised about.Running roughshod? They're changing an out of date meter, that technically is not owned by you, for a new one that you don't even use, but oddly pay for, totally free of charge with next to no effort from yourself. The scoundrels...So unless there's some other reason you don't want a gas engineer around your house that you've not mentioned, it really sounds like you're just being difficult because you can.Put the toys back in the pram and get them to remove the meter instead of replacing it if it's such a big deal to you and save £100 a year in the process. If you ever want reconnected to the mains, any large supplier will fit a meter free of charge since the existing pipework is already there.5 -

As suggested above - just get the meter removed altogether if you have no intention of using it again. It's really not that deep!🎉 MORTGAGE FREE (First time!) 30/09/2016 🎉 And now we go again…New mortgage taken 01/09/23 🏡

Suppliers will try and save money on paying a meter reading company ( Morrisons Data Services read for Eon ) to go out and check the meter visibly and let the smart meter do its job more reliably than a meter reader.
Therefore OP just accept that Eon have the right to install a smart meter and do as others have informed you and get them to remove the meter saving you about £80 a year1 -

You may even have had to pay the gnd to cap your supply that would have been free if done following a supplier meter removal - on the basis you were having it done as part of say building works.
And they don't always disconnect the pipes at road level after the 12m period anyway.
Which is why they iirc they will ask homeowners future plans first when comes to the supply and the meter use before final grid disconnection and even as a general rule wont further touch a plastic connection to the property - leaving it live - so a new meter can easily be installed when requested.
All above based on the summary description by ENA here
https://www.energynetworks.org/customers/disconnecting-from-the-gas-network#:~:text=If there is a gas, removed by your energy supplier.
If after the 6 years you still aren't using the meter - will you really ever ? And pretty soon new build connections - not sure about reconnections (ANYONE?) - will effectively be banned - subject to environmental impact metrics that few if any properties would ever pass.
If you do a supplier check e.g. by phoning the current GND - does the home still have a gas supply registered ?
Simply tell EOn as originally advised - you have had the GND cap the supply, they might ask for proof or contact the local GND themselves. I suspect they may well advise removing the meter so can stop charging for a small fee - or possibly just even stop charging you for it even if don't given the 6 years.
