I Do Not Want A Smart-Meter,Can E.ON Next Force It?
I am currently an E.ON Next dual-energy customer but I have no gas usage as National Grid at my own request disconnected the gas meter from the gas supply. Now I am getting hassled by E.ON Next that the gas meter has reached its end of life which seems a bit odd seeing I have had no gas going through that meter for nigh on 6 years, so how can it have reached its End-of-Life. E.ON Next I feel are using an underhanded tactic to force me to have new gas smart-meter. Any advice please how to thwart E.ON Next's ploy?

Are you paying a standing charge for the meter? If so then it is a fair request.
Might be better to get it totally removed if you are & save the £100 ish a year.Life in the slow lane1 -
If your gas supply has been capped why don't you suggest to Eon that they remove the existing meter and don't replace it?

Why do you still have a gas meter ?Revoraman said:I am currently an E.ON Next dual-energy customer but I have no gas usage as National Grid at my own request disconnected the gas meter from the gas supply. You pay supplier for having the meter in general (although reportedly some might wave SC after a year orcso) not the actual supply.
For 6 years have you still been paying the now average £115 standing charges ?
You should maybe have asked EOn to remove the meter and cap the supply. That would have stopped any SC and dual rate tariff.
The GDN - National Grid no longer listed as one of them on ENA site - would then have disconnected from mains 12m or so later - normally free - if required.

That is not good advice for someone whose meter has reached the end of its certification period, as in that circumstances you do have a choice about the meter being changed.gmje said:Citizens Advice have good solid advice on this topic. if you are being offered a smart meter because your traditional style one is end of life, you do not have a choice about that change being made, and what will be fitted is a smart meter.🎉 MORTGAGE FREE (First time!) 30/09/2016 🎉 And now we go again…New mortgage taken 01/09/23 🏡

Although the gas meter might be smart in itself. It only has a Home Area Network connection in general.
Most homes in UK therefore rely on the comms hub on a smart electric meter to report gas readings externally to supllier etc.
So it probably won't be really smart anyway.

If you are not using it, what difference does it make to you whether it is smart or not?
Seems an odd thing to get exercised about. All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.
Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.6 -
All seems very weird. I suspect Eon want to know if you have fiddled your gas meter.1

A normal unannounced meter read visit would probably do that for a conventional meter, depending on where capped.MP1995 said:All seems very weird. I suspect Eon want to know if you have fiddled your gas meter.
But tge order seems wrong - I thought supplier took meter and at meter cap then dno disconnect 12m + later now standard.
Given the thread report of gas meter reading false when isolated - not sure I'd want a capped supply meter any longer than necessary.
