I am trying to cancel my virgin broadband account but they say I can't
Surely I must be able to cancel it if I can afford it

You can cancel it but would need to buy out any remaining months left , so 12 months × £30 =£360 for exampleEx forum ambassador

If you can afford it, why does this mean VM should allow you to cancel?0

Surely I must be able to cancel it if I can afford itI have the feeling the OP might have meant can't - and they might be trying to cancel the contract as they're trying to cut back on outgoings. If that happened to be the case - then the OP will be on the hook for whatever is the remaining term of the contract. They may play nice if you explain to them that you can't afford it - and reduce the monthly cost if you keep the contract - but in summary, if you took an 18 month contract and you're only 6 months in - you've still got a year to go before a penalty free exit.1
