Many new car warranties were six months to a year in the 1970s and even 1980s.
1985 - Ford Sierra XR4x4, 12 month unlimited mileage warranty...

Three-year warranties are much more recent than that.
But by the end of the third year, any manufacturing issues are long since shaken out - and that's what new car warranties are for. Most failures beyond that point have a large element of wear and tear (or lack of maintenance), and even the 7-year warranties exclude that.0
