Used car warranty

Can someone recommend reputable and trusted used car warranty companies?

I have purchased a 3 year old car that is outside manufacturers warranty.

Worried about horror stories of companies that have small print that avoids payouts.

Thank you in advance.

The manufacturer would probably be the only one I would bother thinking about.  What car and does it have a verifiable full service history?

  • Have you contacted your local main dealer?

They might well offer service plans that includes warranty and roadside assistance, possibly MOT insurance as well?

I understand that it's very good value when you compare to the cost of warranty insurance.

Yep main dealer will be your best bet for that.

Agree with above, manufacturer warranty, especially if you intend to have it serviced and MOT'd by the dealer. I got my rear brake discs replaced under warranty at last MOT, saved me a few hundred quid.

Any such insurance policy that didn't would either be so expensive you wouldn't buy it, or the insurer would go out of business in seconds flat.

Remember, the only reason insurance companies sell these policies is to make a profit.
A profit from what's left of...
    Income - your premium
    ...after...
Expenditure - operating costs, staff costs, office costs, sales costs, marketing costs, taxation... and paying claims.

You are simply betting that your particular car is going to be much less reliable and more expensive than the insurer think it is.

The manufacturer's own policy has an added factor - they want to encourage people to buy their cars, even used, and use their franchise dealers. But by the time you've paid main dealer labour and parts costs (especially for a "premium" brand like BMW), you'd probably be better off elsewhere.
  • Makes you wonder why so many companies still only offer 3 year warranties. It doesn’t shout confidence in their products.

Some manufacturers come with 5 years and some 7 years.
Toyotas even 10 years if you service with them every 10 years.

Suspect it’s to do with how long people tend to keep new cars. 3 years ties in with most PCPs and leases.

3 year warranty has pretty much the norm going back as far as the 70's. Maybe even longer, but 70's is my limit here. Only new manufactures wanting to place a longer warranty as a incentive to switch to their brand have longer.
Sadly the legacy auto makers refuse to give more.
