Should I try again?

I am currently with o2 (carphone warehouse not online which is apparently totally different), I have just come to the end of my 12 month contact. I am currently on o2 200 which is £35 and includes 200 cross network minutes and 50 texts.

Encouraged by all the tales of people getting the latest phone AND paying less I rang up saying that I was thinking of going to Three to get the Nokia 6680 free and 500 minutes and 100 texts for £30 per month.

I had been told only yesterday by CPW that the Nokia 6680 will not be available until mid July so I said to the guy that I would prefer to stay with o2 but didn't want to wait til July only to be told that I wasn't eligble for a free upgrade and if I wasn't going to be eligble then I would move to three straight away.

He said the 6680 is available but will cost £89.99 to upgrade, to which I replied 'that's a shame, can I have my PAC code then please'. He simply said yes, tapped away for a few seconds then gave me my PAC code, no negotiations on either the phone price or tariff price!

My question is should I ring up and try to speak to someone else as I really am not keen on moving to three, having heard bad things about the network. What should I say this time bearing in mind I already have a PAC code from them. Any advice appreciated.

PAC codes expire after 30 days if you do not actually move to another network, so dont worry about that. You can always ask for a PAC code again. Just cos youve asked for it once does not mean you have to use it. It is valid for 30 days. If you do not use it within that time, and you decide later on you still want to move, just request another one. It is very simple. Just ring up again and ask for a good deal. I would agree that 3 has not been getting good recomendations. Just persist, and dont be fobbed off by carphone warehouse. Go to an O2 shop direct.

I don't trust CPW. I was in one of their stores the other week and heard a woman trying to upgrade her phone but CPW were trying to charge a fortune for this. In the end, she just left. After I had finished in there (getting a top-up), I saw this woman outside and just mentioned to her that if she was to ask for her PAC code as she was moving networks they would probably offer her the deal she wanted. Unfortunately, though I didn't stay to find out if it worked.

Basically, the moral of the story is depending on how you come across and who you ask (and probably what mood they are in) then they may consider offering you a better deal - or call your bluff. They must get a lot of people doing the same so they are aware of the tricks.

I'd wait till your PAC expires or wait a few days then ring again and mention that you have lost the PAC code that you were given and could they tell you it again or re-issue another one. Don't start talking about what offers you would like until they ask why you are leaving. When/if they ask you why you are leaving just say you would rather not as you are happy with them but have seen this deal better elsewhere (have to hand who is doing this deal) and you want to charge me an upgrade fee when this other company can do it for nothing!

    Hope this helps

I tried ringing O2 but they said they are totally separate to CPW O2 and therefore I couldn't upgrade through them but if I wanted I could take out a new 12 month contract with O2 through them but would still have to port my number over to them!? Also they don't have the phone that I want/need! available yet.

I tried bbb_uk's trick of ringing up and saying that i'd lost the piece of paper that I wrote my PAC code on but they cheerfully gave it to me again no questions asked.

    Any other tactics gratefully appreciated!

I got my 02 phone from The Link Store, I just phoned up 02 direct on 0800 977 7027, this is there buisness number, but just say "sorry" and ask to be put through to personal phones, works all the time!!. After the third phone call to them they offered me a Free Sammy D500 with 02 bluetooth headset 750 mins anytime any network for £15.00 a month. By the way I was on there 1000 mins offpeak tariff before that. I don't know if you did, but don't mention that you got your phone from CPW, maybe that's why they won't give you an upgrade?.

Carphone O2 and O2 direct are totally different companies, you won't be able to get an upgrade through O2 direct because you aren't with them, not even on their systems, hence why if you went to them you'd have to port your number over to them....
I'd suggest starting a new contract with Vodafone/Orange/3 direct as all these companies are selling the 6680. This time next year then you'd be able to get a decent upgrade.

This may sound silly, but do you need a PAC code if you are on PAYG?

To port (move) your number over from one network to another then yes.
