Tax credits to Universal credit

Hi we are currently still on working tax credits and child tax credits, currently waiting for our migration letter to universal credit.
If my husband gets paid his wages on the 27th of every month what is a good date to apply to make it a smooth transition. Do you have to have a payment same time as wages or can you have uc payment on a different week.
I'm completely new to UC so don't know a lot.

Best to open a claim for UC not near your wages being at the end of the month, to prevent any difficulties if they're paid early in any months e.g. near bank holidays, over Christmas, etc.

When you submit your UC claim that starts your assessment period.  It will run for one calendar month, then you get the UC payment 5-7 days later.  You can have the UC dates be whatever you want, it just makes things simpler if your assessment dates don't end around the same time as wages are normally paid so you don't end up with two lots of wages in the same period if they're paid early.

So a good date range to submit your UC claim could be any time between the 1st and 20th, perhaps.

Your UC assessment period will start the day you hit submit on your claim.  The assesment period is then from that date to the day befor in the following month, eg 07 Oct - 06 Nov and payment will be 5-7 days after 06 Nov.

Unlike TC, UC is calculated monthly and paid in arrears, when TC which is calculated yearly and decided into 13 payments.

If you think your going to be short because of this you can ask for an advance which you will then payback over the coming year.

    Hope that helps…

Agreed, but I'd move the recommendation forward a few days into the month, so not to claim on or too near 1st, on the basis that husband may not stay with their current employer (and thus pay date) forever. So 5th-20th would be my recommendation just to be safe(r).

I would bring the last date to claim forward one day to the 19th to avoid any problem with double salary at Christmas. Normal pay date 27th, if paid one week early that is the 20th.

    ETA,
Ignore me, claiming on the 20th will of course mean an AP end date of the 19th so avoiding the double salary issue

Goes to give head a wobble

My advice would also be to avoid having the assessment period end around when the wages are due. If you claim around the 5th of the month then the assessment period would be 5th to 4th and the payment date 11th. That would appeal to me in your circumstances as it would mean getting paid around the 27th of one month and then getting UC halfway to when the next wages are paid.
