Thanks all. It's in. It seems to be working OK with Eco 7 although the wifi on the IHD keeps dropping so that's pretty useless but from what I read most people seem to use different apps on their phones to check their usage??
The first one he put in didn't work so presumably had a fault, which didn't inspire confidence, but it seems ok now.

The Bright phone app is pretty good for keeping an eye on your usage. It is free to use.

It isn't real time like the IHD as it lags a few hours behind, but it will show you the usage and cost.
You need to enrol for the service but it is pretty simple to do.
It should pick up the cost and Eco7 times automatically, but if it doesn't you can enter these manually in the App anyway.

How far away from your meter is the IHD? In the brief period ours did work, I found that the range was hopeless. Unless it was very close to the meter, it kept losing the signal.

I found the same. In the end I moved it close to the kitchen wall directly the other side of the outside meter and it never drops now.

EDF disconnected my off-peak supply when they installed a smart meter!  The 2 live incoming cables for immersion, and storage heater were not connected to the meter and just terminated in a block, so not hot water of heating.  They would not fix it and insisted everything was done correctly by the engineer!
I had to pay for an electrician to reconnect them to the meter. Be very careful if you have economy 7

That's not going to happen if people follow the advice in this thread.
