Flight cancelled

I booked return flights from Leeds to Malaga through MyTrip.com last June. They used Ryanair as the carrier. When we contacted Ryanair to book assistance for my wife we were told that they could not provide assistance because they already had 5 people with assistance on that flight and they weren't legally allowed to carry any more. My only option was to book a different flight with them. It cost an extra £179 to book to travel a day earlier. It was even an inconvenient flight time, arriving around midnight.

Any way I could successfulky claim, either against Ryanair or MyTrip.com. i hadn't really thought about this until Mytrip sent me an emai tiday, suggesting that I mighthave a claim for my flight being cancelled, with a link to AirTrip, a claims management service. They take 35% commission and are all about claiming for delays, which isn't the case here. I wouldn't use a claims management agent any way.

I'd be grateful for any advice.

Your flight wasn't cancelled though. Why didn't you book assistance at the same time as the flight back in June. There'll always be a case of first come first served.

What sort of assistance did you ask for?

I have never come across a 5 person limit for general assistance.  I flew back Easyjet yesterday and they had 12 special assistance customers on the flight. I can’t imagine RyanAir is that different.

Only limitations I can think of is if you have asked the airline to supply oxygen or if you are taking an electric powered wheelchair.

  • This has come up before and Ryanair do have a limit on Special Assistance. Legally they can, citing safety concerns (bit of a catch all phrase) . The advice - on their website and elsewhere - is to request it as you book. Unfortunately, as you’ve voluntarily changed your flight, there isn’t a lot you can claim for.

The assistance is in part outsourced. Will be capacity constraints. With the aircraft no doubt being turned around for departure to a strict timetable.
