Have you checked ikeas offerings?
Sure it can't be fixed?
1 - It's a Whirlpool FXVM6
2 - Yes. There's one compact oven for about £700 that'll fit, but it's not the same height, so not ideal. The rest are 55.5cms wide or above.
3 - I've been advised by an electrician to get a new one
Any ideas?Try measuring the width of the oven door. The door is the widest part of the oven, and that’s the dimension that is normally used.If measuring the cabinet width, you need to measure from the outside of each of the side panels.HTH.0 -

I suspect any width measurements you're being given will be the width of "the standard sized front panel/door", including the stated measurements of your existing oven.0 -

I found it helpful to look at technical diagrams of ovens I was interested in, to be sure that I was comparing the same measurements.2

In case someone else who's having the same problem finds this discussion, and finds themselves equally unhelped by the comments left here, I'll tell you how I resolved my situation. I found that the Smeg Cucina SF6400TVX was 550mm wide (the body of the oven, not the door), so after moving a gas pipe and swapping some screws for ones with a lower profile I was comfortably able to fit it in my oven recess.
It wasn't cheap, but was nowhere near as expensive as the mini ovens that were recommended.1 -

For the benefit of anyone else who comes across this thread. The facts are
From the OPs first post "so a new oven needs to fit into a gap that's 55cms wide, and I haven't been able to find anything that's narrow enough."
Comes back saying they purchased an oven whose stated dimensions according to the SMEG website are: H59.2 x W59.7 x D54.8 and decides to take offence at the suggestions others had kindly provided.
So moral of the story is, don't act like the OP and remember that people can only respond to the information given. We (thankfully) were not acquainted enough with the OP to know what their kitchen looked like or where gas pipes could be moved to.
