What is this outside cable?

Options
Hi folks,

In our driveway we have this fairly random cable and I've no idea what it's for. It gets in the way when moving bins in and out of the driveway as it gets caught in the wheels. I'm considering just cutting it away, but thought I'd see if anyone knows what it is? It looks as though it comes from underground on the front porch/patio area, runs along the driveway slightly, along the house and then into where the air brick is. I'm sure it's not connected to anything, just a little bit strange as I'm not sure where it starts and ends! See photos, any ideas? I've provided a close up too, if that's of any use.

Thank you in advance.

  • Is it a broadband cable?
  • NTL/Virgin or whatever the equivalent is where you live by the looks of it.

  • I'm really not sure. I don;t fancy cutting it to find out  :#

I probably need BT or someone to come out and have a look at it

It looks like self supporting cable with a catenary wire, normally used on aerial routes between poles.Never seen it taken directly into a customers premises like that, the catenary wire is usually stripped off,as there is a danger from lightning strikes on the catenary wire.

One possible way of getting a indication of what it maybe would be to do check with local telecom providers what services are available at your address.
  • Thanks all. There seems like a general consensus here!

Yes it looks like the cable TV cable I had in Leeds 20 years ago - designed to be under the ground rather than in the air I think.

I'd also go for NTL/Virgin cable. It should have been buried in some green conduit so that it isn't a trip hazard.
If you are certain that you don't have cable TV/broadband, you could cut the cable and coil it up out of the way. But if you suddenly find yourself without TV/broadband, expect a hefty bill to reinstate the cable.

  • We had exactly the same looking cable when we moved in, it came in through a hole in the lounge wall.  Turned out to be sky tv.
