  • I wonder if we will end up with something similar to allow you to fit a gas or oil boiler when they become nominally banned?

That assumes that oil boilers end up being banned.    HVO or other synthetic fuels are being tested at the moment as an alternative to heating oil.

Quite possible. I only have a 60A fuse on my incoming electricity supply. Already have an EV charging point, an electric shower (8.5kW). on top of all the other normal household appliances. Chuck in a heat pump, and I could potentially blow the fuse.

I expect so, as it brings about the same kind of headline as "non-condensing domestic oil boilers have not been legally sold since 1st April 2007."

Generally you can get a free upgrade to an 80 A mains fuse when required, 100 A sometimes (provided your external wiring can support a higher current).  And the man who did mine told me these fuses are very slow to blow so I imagine the electric shower would not be a problem.  But if you got a heat pump you could save money by dispensing with the electric shower, it would not be necessary provided you have a hot water pipe nearby.

Not sure if the incoming cable is up for 80A. Certainly doesn't look to be big enough for 100A. As things currently stand, I see quite a large drop in voltage when using big loads. Drawing even more power would make it worse.

Who is your DNO? National Grid, for example, will not install anything more than 80A fuse on a single phase connection.
I'm surprised you didn't require a fuse upgrade when the EV charging point was installed. What is your peak demand? Were the DNO correctly notified? What paperwork was completed and sent to the DNO?

Our green credentials: 12kW Samsung ASHP for heating, 7.2kWp Solar (South facing), Tesla Powerwall 3 (13.5kWh), Net exporter

Thanks for that heads up. I currently have a 100A and would not be at all happy if it were changed to 80A as the minimum load at say 0100GMT on a cold winter's night would be 20.4kW and that's assuming I wasn't cooking.

Absolutely no idea if the DNO was notified or what, if any, paperwork was completed. The EV charger was installed by a third party subcontracted by the vehicle supplier (it was on lease). Not even seen the Part P certificate...
Highest peak load seen over the last year is just 9.43kW whilst charging the EV and cooking an evening meal. Should I ever install a heat pump, some intelligent load management could be programmed in to the home automation system. The EV charger supposedly has a current transformer so that it can reduce charge current if the household load goes above a set point. But the CT is clipped to the wrong cable, and I have no information on programming load management.

Another U turn is highly likely.  Many words get spoken prior to understanding the macro picture.
